COMM 35912 Gender and Communication (3)

Examines influence of gender in interpersonal and

organizational communication including communication

processes in interpersonal violence, STDs

and other contemporary social problems. Prerequisite:

none. This course may be used to satisfy the

diversity requirement.

 

ENG 21002 Introduction to Women’s Literature (3)

Introduction to works by women writing in English,

and to literary and gender issues they raise. Prerequisite:

ENG 21011 or equivalent. This course may be

used to satisfy the diversity requirement.

 

ENG 34021 Women’s Literature (3)

Critical and theoretical consideration of gender

issues concerning British and U.S. women writers

studied in their historical and cultural contexts. Prerequisite:

ENG 30001 and 25001 or 25002 or permission.

This course may be used to satisfy the

diversity requirement.

 

HDFS 44022 Changing Roles of Men and Women (3)

A study of roles of men and women—past, present

and future. Prerequisite: human development and

family studies majors only or permission or SOC

12050.

 

HED 32544 Human Sexuality (3)

A study of the role and meaning of human sexuality

throughout the life cycle for self and society. Prerequisite:

none.

 

HIST 49195 Selected Topics in History (3)

Special history course, the subject/topic of which

varies in accordance with desire and competence of

faculty. Precise title to be inserted in Schedule of

Classes. Prerequisite: junior standing.

 

JUS 37411 Women in Crime and Justice (3)

Observation of women as a significant group in crime

and their role in the development and operation of the

criminal justice system. Prerequisite: 9 credit hours

of JUS, including 12000, or permission. This course

may be used to satisfy the diversity requirement.

 

PAS 33110 The Black Woman: Historical Perspectives (3)

This course surveys the experiences of African-American

women throughout various periods of history

and their roles in shaping the social, economic, political

and cultural development of societies. Prerequisites:

PAS 23002 or permission. This course may be

used to satisfy the diversity requirement.

 

PEP 25059 Sport in Society (3)

Analysis of how sport relates to the social relations

and cultural values of United States society.The

course is framed by a critical evaluative perspective,

examining how social class, ethnicity, race and gender

relations contour sport practices. Prerequisite:

none. This course may be used to satisfy the diversity

requirements.

 

PHIL 31040 Women and Philosophy (3)

Examines the influences and contributions of

women to philosophy and the influences philosophy

has had on women either historically or currently.

Prerequisite: one course in philosophy, junior

standing or permission. This course may be used to

satisfy the diversity requirement.

 

POL 40470 Women and Politics (3)

Examines origins, development, current record of

century-old women’s movement unique in U.S.

annals; compares it with other contemporary social

movements. Examines issues of women and public

policy. Prerequisite: POL 10100, 10300 or permission.

This course may be used to satisfy the diversity

requirement.

 

PSYC 40625 Development of Gender Role and Identity (3)

A life span, developmental model is used to analyze

the changes which occur with age in gender-related

role performance and identity formation. Prerequisite:

PSYC 11762. This course may be used to satisfy

the diversity requirement.

 

SOC 42315 Sociology of Changing Gender Roles (3)

An examination of the institutions, institutional linkages

and social processes that contribute to change

and stability of traditional gender roles and the consequences

of changes. Prerequisites: SOC 12050 and

junior standing, or permission. This course may be

used to satisfy the diversity requirement.

 

WMST 20095 Special Topics in Women’s Studies (1-5)

Repeated registration permitted when topic varies.

Study of particular contemporary figures, events

and social practices or phenomenon as they relate

to women’s studies. Recent topics:  the female mind,

women and cinema, historical symbols of women, 20th

century women leaders.

Prerequisite: none.

 

WMST 30000 Colloquium in Women’s Studies (3)

A critical investigation of the position and category

of women from a cross-cultural, historical and interdisciplinary

perspective, with special emphasis on controversies, dilemmas,

major themes and issues in women’s studies.

Prerequisite: junior standing or permission.

This course may be used to satisfy the

diversity requirement.

 

WMST 30001 Feminist Theory (3)

An examination of important historical and contemporary

works of feminist theory and their influence on

the development of feminist thought and practice in

the U.S. and worldwide. Issues including race, ethnicity

and sexuality will be addressed. Prerequisite: none.

 

WMST 30095 Special Topics in Women’s Studies II (1-5)

Repeated registration permitted when topic varies.

Study of selected topics in women’s studies

organized around historical and theoretical issues, trends

and movements.  Prerequisite: none.,

 

WMST 30196 Women Studies Individual Investigation (1-3)

The design and completion of a scholarly research

project related to women’s studies, and the presentation

of findings at the end of the term. Typically a

capstone course for those completing the women’s

studies minor. Arrangements must be made in the

semester prior to registration. Prerequisite:

WMST 40992 Practicum in Women’s Studies (3)

An assignment at a private, public or nonprofit

organization that centers on women’s issues, such

as education, health and policy making. Arrangements

must be made in the semester prior to registration.

WMST 40095 Special Topics in Women’s Studies III (1-5)

Repeated registration permitted when topic varies.

Informed study of critical issues in women’s studies

from a select perspective, for example,

an international or global perspective.

Prerequisite: WMST 30000 or 30001.
