"When we women offer our experience as our truth, as human truth, all the maps change." -Ursula LeGuin-

Welcome to our Website!

Mind your step. Look out for falling objects.

You are - as it so happens - entering a construction zone! Because ...
We ... are building!

The Women’s Studies Program (WMST) at Kent State University affords an opportunity for KSU students to take - for a sustained moment - vital, timely and ultimately necessary perspectives offered by the distinct scholarship across fields and disciplines which we term Women's Studies.

As of just this very year, our Program is undertaking a mission ripe with potential for our future.  The Women's Studies' Nesting Project- only a dozen babysteps or so in progress - aims not only to make our program an integral part of every academic discipline but also to make those disciplines an integral part of us. Our efforts, we hope, will add new breadth, depth and freedom to Women's Studies ... and earn for us, a felt presence campuswide, providing unique opportunities, resources and contacts.

Women's Studies - at present - is an interdisciplinary minor program requiring 21 credit hours; its coursework is flexible and diverse enough that students can, in large part, shape it to meet their individual needs.  WMST Minors choose one of two required courses (WMST 30000, Colloquium in Women's Studies or WMST 30001, Feminist Theory) in addition to completing 15 credit hours of coursework - offered by WMST affiliates from more than 25 different academic fields.  In addition, each term, the Program presents a number of WMST-Special Topics courses - which may be counted toward the minor.

WMST minors -- finally --may  design and complete two defining courses, according to their individual needs:  WMST 30196, Individual Investigation (a required capstone course), and, if they choose, WMST 40992, Practicum in Women's Studies (an optional course).  Students are encouraged to consult WMST faculty affiliates and the WMST Director when planning their course of study for the WMST Minor.

Got FORMS?!? Need Some?!? For the Individual Investigation form, click HERE.  Click HERE for the Practicum form.  Note:  There are two different Practicum forms, the NEW one more suitable for students who wish to work with Kent's Women's Studies Program in an Intern capacity, the OLD one more suitable for students who desire an OFF-campus internship experience.

The program is newly housed in Merrill Hall, Room 315B.  Suzanne Holt (WMST) and Heather Adams(WRC) issued a joint statement from the Directors relative to WMST's relocation - from the Women's Resource Center - where the program had been housed since the inception of the Center.

If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact the Program Director,
Dr. Suzanne Holt - via e-mail: suzannet1@copper.net or slholt@kent.edu.

The Director's generally recurring office hours vary semester by semester; students are encouraged to e-mail or call ahead (330.672.8042) for a confirmed meeting time.  Various unforeseen demands and obligations can occasionally alter the Director's regimen; if you do miss her, please leave a note with your name, #, a message.

The Director will happily meet by appointment.
