academic degrees — for a complete listing, see degrees offered in the Academic Affairs section of the Undergraduate Catalog. See AP Stylebook for proper punctuation and capitalization questions.
academic term — see semester.
acronym — University style follows the Associated Press Stylebook and avoids the use of acronyms. However, after a complete reference on a Web page, acronyms may be used where space is a factor -– headlines and links. Check the stylebook for familiar and acceptable acronyms such as FBI or SAT.
address — in accordance with U.S. postal guidelines and our nonprofit mailing status, only five lines are permitted in the official address of the university; see also mail. Refer to the section on “Use of the Kent State Logo” in the Guide to Visual Standards for the proper way to incorporate the logo and format return address copy.

Advanced Liquid Crystalline Optical Materials, Center for — Kent State University’s Center for Advanced Liquid Crystalline Optical Materials (ALCOM) no longer receives funding from the National Science Foundation. Please revise your communications to remove the reference to the center as the “National Science Foundation Science and Technology Center” for Advanced Liquid Crystalline Optical Materials. It is now the “Center for Advanced Liquid Crystalline Optical Materials (ALCOM).

alumni — feminine and masculine forms are listed in the AP Stylebook. Identify Kent State alumni by their class year(s) with an apostrophe before the year. The apostrophe should face left. If individuals have more than one degree from Kent State, place a comma between the class years. Call the Kent State University Alumni Association at 330-672-5368 to verify information concerning alumni. The form for listing alumni follows.

ampersand — see and.
and — University style follows the Associated Press Stylebook and uses and, not an ampersand, in print communications unless an ampersand is part of the proper name of a non-university entity. When writing for Web communications, use and in the text comprising the body of a Web site page. However, ampersands are permitted as part of the Kent State University Web site’s navigation or a design element used as part of a Web site’s navigation if using and interferes with spacing or the overall design of the Web site.

bibliographical citations — publications containing faculty and staff achievements from various academic disciplines should be styled according to A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses and Dissertations, available at the University Bookstore. Departmental newsletters should follow the style manual of their respective disciplines.
