Issues and Models to Promote Integration In Extreme Situations: Prevention, Intervention, and Policy

Dr. Brian W. Flynn is a consultant, writer, trainer and speaker, specializing in preparation for, response to and recovery from, the psychosocial aspects of large-scale emergencies and disasters. He currently serves as an associate director of the Center for the Study of Traumatic Stress and adjunct professor of psychiatry in the Department of Psychiatry, Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences, in Bethesda.

On Jan. 1, 2002, Flynn left Federal service as a Rear Admiral/Assistant Surgeon General in the United States Public Health Service. He directly has operated, and supervised the operation of, the federal government’s domestic disaster mental health program (including terrorism), programs in suicide and youth violence prevention, child trauma, refugee mental health, women’s and minority mental health concerns, and rural mental health.

In addition, Flynn has served as an advisor to many federal departments and agencies, states, and national professional organizations. Recognized internationally for his expertise in large-scale trauma, Flynn has been an advisor to practitioners, academicians and government officials in many nations.

Reacting and Overreacting to Terrorism

Dr. John Mueller is professor of political science at Ohio State University and Woody Hayes Chair of National Security Studies at the Mershon Center. Before taking his current position, he was a Guest Scholar at the Brookings Institution and served as a visiting professor at the University of Alberta in Canada and the Comenius University in Bratislava, Slovakia.

His most recent book, Overblown: How Politicians and the Terrorism Industry Inflate National Security Fears, and Why We Believe Them, was published in November 2006 by Free Press.

Mueller is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, has been a John Simon Guggenheim Fellow, and has received grants from the National Science Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Mueller holds an M.A. and Ph.D. in political science from University of California, Los Angeles.
