Education: Professor Stacher received his Ph.D. from the University of St. Andrews.
Research Interests: comparative politics/international relations, politics of authoritarianism and democratization, & social movements.
Dr. Stacher's teaching interests include Middle East politics (Egypt and Syria), social movements, institutional analysis, and authoritarianism.
His research focuses on authoritarian institutions and adaptation of republican regimes in the Arab world. He has published on topics such as Egypt's Muslim Brothers, the Wasat movement, opposition politics and presidential elections in authoritarian contexts as well as human rights in Egypt.
Professor Stacher's reseach has appeared in Review of African Political Economy, British Journal of Middle Eastern Studies, Middle East Journal, & Arab Studies Quarterly. He is also a frequent contributor to Middle East Report.
Stacher is currently writing a book that compares institutions and co-optation to explain authoritarian durability in Egypt and Syria. He is also researching hereditary succession in Syria. His next projects include articles on the Syrian succession, Egyptian Muslim Brothers, and the globalization of Egyptian authoritarianism.
