College of the Arts Hosts Weeklong Calendar of Arts Events on Kent Campus (03/31/2009)
The College of the Arts, formerly known as the College of Fine and Professional Arts, is hosting its Spring for the Arts weeklong event, April 12 – 19. The week will feature a sampling of events from each of its schools including art exhibits, music performances, a Shakespearean play, the annual portfolio fashion show for the School of Fashion Merchandising and Design and a plethora of exhibits in fashion, decorative arts and more, at the Kent State University Museum. 

Iranian Expert and Former Kent State Faculty Member Slated to Speak on Kent Campus April 16 (03/31/2009)
With more than 15 years of experience teaching Middle Eastern politics, Dr. Ayra Amirie offers an in-depth knowledge about the language and culture of one of the most critical parts of the world. Amirie will present a lecture titled, "A Personal Perspective on U.S.-Iranian Relations," at 7:30 p.m. on April 16 in the Kent Student Center Kiva.

Kent State’s Roe Green Visiting Director Series Brings Associate Artistic Director of Utah Shakespearean Festival to Direct Twelfth Night (03/31/2009)
This year’s Roe Green Visiting Director Series for The School of Theatre and Dance at Kent State University will be nationally-acclaimed director J.R. Sullivan undertaking William Shakespeare’s comedic masterpiece Twelfth Night, April 17 – 26, 2009 in the Wright-Curtis Theatre in the Music and Speech Center, 1325 Theatre Drive in Kent.

Kent State University’s Men’s and Women’s Choruses Perform Spring Concert (03/31/2009)
The Men's and Women's Choruses’ spring concert will be held in the sanctuary of the United Church of Christ of Kent, 1400 East Main Street, at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 17.  Admission is free, but a free-will offering will be accepted to support the touring activities of both choruses.  Parking is free.

Kent State College of Nursing Announces Four New Careers in Nursing Scholarship Recipients (3/26/09)
The Kent State University College of Nursing is proud to announce four new recipients of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's New Careers in Nursing Scholarship. Each student will receive a $10,000 scholarship toward his or her education in the Accelerated Baccalaureate Nursing Program.

Severe Weather Safety Week is March 22 to 28; Expect Emergency Alert Notification Tests Wednesday, March 25 (3/24/09)
As part of Severe Weather Safety Week, Wednesday, March 25 has been designated Tornado Awareness Day. On this day, the tornado warning signals throughout the entire state of Ohio will be activated at 9:50 a.m. Kent State University will participate in that testing, slated to last for three minutes, by testing all emergency alert devices on campus.

Kent State University Celebrates Honors (03/20/2009)
The Honors College will celebrate the intellectual and artistic life of Kent State University during its annual Honors Week on Sunday, April 5, through Saturday, April 11. The campus-wide celebration is an opportunity for the university to highlight its vitality and to provide its community members with a sense of unity and belonging to somethign worthwhile and enduring.

African Community Theatre Presents “Jar The Floor” (03/20/2009)
After a year of renovations, Oscar Ritchie Hall will reopen its doors for the African Community Theatre’s spring 2009 production. The theatre returns with the presentation of “Jar the Floor,” written by Cheryl West.  “Jar the Floor” opens April 17 and performances continue through April 26.

Ronald Mallett Speaks at Honors College 75th Anniversary (03/20/2009)
In celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Honors College, Ronald Mallett, professor of theoretical physics at the University of Connecticut will be giving a lecture titled “Time Traveler: A Scientist’s Personal mission to Make Time Travel a Reality” on April 7.

Kent State University Chorale and KSU Wind Ensemble Join Forces for Annual Concert (03/20/2009)
On Sunday, April 5, 2009, at 7:30 p.m. in Cartwright Auditorium, the Kent State University Wind Ensemble and KSU Chorale will present their annual joint concert. Wayne Gorder will conduct the Wind Ensemble in Percy Grainger's adventurous setting of "Hill Song No. 2." Featured guest artists for the program will be the Kent Faculty Brass Quintet.

Holocaust Expert to Speak about Jewish Refugees from Nazi Europe at Kent State (3/18/09)
Kent State’s Jewish Studies Program will host Holocaust educator and author Deborah Dwork on Tuesday, March 31, at 7:30 p.m. in the Kent Student Center Kiva. The presentation is free and open to the public.

Famed Chef Marcus Samuelson Visits Kent State April 1 (03/17/09)
World-renown chef Marcus Samuelsson, of New York City’s Aquavit restaurant, will deliver the 2009 Schwebel Lecture by speaking about his journey as a chef and love for Swedish and African cuisine at 4 p.m., Wednesday, April 1, in the Kent Student Center Kiva. The free event, sponsored by the Schwebel Baking Company, is open to the public and organized by Kent State' Hospitality Management program.

Free Concert Features Miami String Quartet and Guest Pianist Andre-Michel Schub at Kent State University (03/17/2009)
Kent State University's Hugh A. Glauser School of Music is proud to host the internationally recognized Miami String Quartet with special guest, renowned pianist Andre-Michel Schub, as they perform on Saturday, April 4 at 7:30 p.m. in Ludwig Recital Hall in the Music and Speech Center, 1325 Theatre Drive, Kent, Ohio.

Kent Dance Ensemble 2009 Main Stage Concert a Celebration of Spirit (03/17/2009)
On April 3 and 4 at 8 p.m. and April 5 at 2 p.m., Kent State University's School of Theatre and Dance will proudly present the Kent Dance Ensemble's 18th annual main stage concert, Ardent Spirits, in the E. Kent State Museum Looks Back at Iconic Arts Club (03/10/2009)
The exhibition, which runs from March 19, 2009 through Feb. 28, 2010, highlights the profound effect of the Kokoon Arts Club of Cleveland, formed in 1912. Its most memorable activities were the annual masked balls at staged venues around the city.

National Alumni Day of Service Connects Kent State Alumni (03/10/2009)

Kent State's Lane Selected as Leader in Lifelong Learning (03/10/09)
Kent State expert Amy Lane is selected as an international leader among lifelong learning program professionals. Learning Resources Network (LERN), an international association of lifelong learning programming, has selected an elite group of 10 panelists from North America to share best practices in lifelong learning programs.

The Ohio Confederation of Teacher Education Organizations (OCTEO) is holding its spring meeting March 11-13, 2009, at the Crowne Plaza in Dublin, Ohio. The Virginia Hamilton Conference on Multicultural Literature for Youth Celebrates 25th Anniversary April 2 and 3 (03/03/2009)
The Virginia Hamilton Conference on Multicultural Literature for Youth will celebrate its 25th anniversary April 2 - 3, 2009, at Kent State University. Sponsored by Kent State's College and Graduate School of Education, Health and Human Services; the School of Library and Information Science; and the Office of Continuing and Distance Education, the conference provides a forum for discussion of multicultural themes and issues in literature for children and young adults. The registration deadline is Friday, March 20.

Spring 2009 Bowman Breakfast (03/03/2009)
The spring 2009 Bowman Breakfast will take place on Thursday, March 19, at 7:30 a.m. at the Kent American Legion Hall. The featured speaker for the event will be Alan Mountjoy, manager of Urban Design for Chan Krieger Sieniewicz Architecture & Urban Design. Dance Majors and Minors Present Engaging Student Dance Festival: No Explanation Needed (03/03/2009)
Kent State University’s School of Theatre and Dance presents its annual student concert, Student Dance Festival 2009: No Explanation Needed, on March 13, 14 and 15in Wright-Curtis Theatre on the Kent Campus of Kent State University. The concert will premiere the contemporary works of seven student choreographers from the Kent State Dance Division.

Kent State, AFSCME Agree on New Contract (02/27/09)

Kent State University Mail Services, in conjunction with the United States Postal Service, is hosting a Passport Fair on March 11 at the Student Recreation and Wellness Center.This one-day event is for individuals who need to renew an existing passport or make an application for a new passport.

Wick Poetry Panels and Readings – Appreciating Our Interns and Fellows (02/24/2009)
The Wick Poetry Center continues its 25th Anniversary Celebration of Encouraging New Voices March 12 at 3:30 p.m., with a panel dubbed, “Internship as Beginning” in Room 313 of the Kent Student Center.  At 8 p.m., past Wick interns and fellows return to read their work in Room 306 of the Kent Student Center.  Poets who will participate are Vi Dutcher, Johnpaul Higgins, Karen Kastner, Seema Kurup, Douglas Mason, Josh Storey and Andrew Wilson.

Kent State Stark Campus Dean Announces Departure (02/20/09)
Dr. Betsy V. Boze, who has served as the dean of Kent State University's Stark Campus, has announced her decision to step down from the dean’s role for personal reasons, effective immediately, Provost Robert G. Frank announced today.

Chemistry Professor Received a Doctor Honoris Causa from Nicholaus Copernicus University (02/20/2009)
Dr. Mietek Jaroniec, Kent State University professor, has been awarded the Doctor of Honoris Causa award from the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun, Poland. Jaroniec was recognized for his scientific contributions to interfacial chemistry, collaboration with Polish scientists and promotion of Polish science and culture. The award was presented during a special ceremony on Feb. 19.

Project to Encourage Local Government Collaboration, Efficiency (2/20/09)
The Fund for Our Economic Future has awarded funding to Kent State University to assist local governments in Northeast Ohio in working together more effectively.  The funds will be used to carry out a new Call to Action program created by the Fund for Our Economic Future to foster more efficient and effective government collaboration in Northeast Ohio. 

Vice Premier Paul Chiu Named Honorary Chairman of the 19th Asia-Pacific Futures Research Symposium (2/18/09)
The Asia-Pacific Futures Research Symposium (APFRS) is privileged to announce that Dr. Paul Chiu, Vice Premier of the Republic of China, has accepted the position of honorary chairman effective when the 2009 APFRS returns to Taiwan on

Dr. Mark Holder Named 2009 Secretary and Treasurer of the Institute for Financial Markets (2/17/09)
The Institute for Financial Markets (IFM) announced the appointment of Mark Holder as secretary and treasurer of the foundation. Dr. Holder is director of Kent State University’s Financial Engineering Program (MSFE) and chairman of the Department of Finance.  

Kent State School of Library and Information Science to Host Library Careers Nights (02/18/2009)
Learn more about the library profession at one of Kent State’s School of Library and Information Science’s Library Careers Nights. The Kent Campus event is scheduled on Wednesday, March 4, at 5 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom. The Columbus event is set for Monday, March 9, at 5 p.m. in the State Library of Ohio.

Polish speaker explores Polish resistance and rescue in World War II (02/18/2009)
The Kosciuszko Foundation presents John J. Michalczyk, professor and chair of the fine arts department at Boston College. Michalczyk will speak on “Zegota; Council for Aid to Jews” on Thursday, March 5, at 7 p.m.

Kent State University presents Third KSU Orchestra Concert in its Series Featuring Two Student Concerto Competition Winners (02/17/2009)
Kent State University’s Hugh A. Glauser School of Music presents the KSU Orchestra performing “Masterful Celebrations” with conductor Christopher James Lees on Friday, Feb. 27, at 7:30 p.m. in Carol A. Cartwright Hall at the Kent Campus.
Tickets are $10 for general admission, $5 for students, and Kent State students are free with ID. For information call the concert line at 330-672-3609.

McCallum-Bonar to Speak at Kent State University (2/17/09)
In celebration of Black History Month, Kent State University’s Jewish Studies Program, Department of Pan-African Studies and Kent Hillel will host speaker Colleen McCallum-Bonar on Monday, Feb. 23, 2009 at 7:30 p.m. in the university’s Student Center Governance Chambers. The presentation is free and open to the public. 

Classic Bronte Novel Brought To Life On School Of Theatre And Dance Stage (02/17/2009)
The School of Theatre and Dance at Kent State University proudly presents Jane Eyre in a musical form aptly titled, “Jane Eyre: The Musical.” The show will run Feb. 20 through March 1, in E. Turner Stump Theatre at the Kent Campus.  Originally presented on Broadway in 2000, the show incorporates the music and lyrics by Paul Gordon and book and additional lyrics by John Caird.

Kent State University Museum Explores the Work of American Designer Michael Kors (02/16/2009)
The Kent State University Museum is proud to present the first museum exhibition on the work of American fashion designer Michael Kors. Known for his role as a judge in the critically acclaimed television show Project Runway, Michael Kors is recognized as one of America’s preeminent sportswear designers and entrepreneurs. 

Wick Poetry Center Features Poetry Panels and Readings (02/16/2009)
The Wick Poetry Center, now in its 25th year, will begin its schedule of events for 2009 on Feb 26.  The day’s events begin at 10:30 a.m. with a panel titled “Chapbooks as a Beginning” in Room 306 of the Kent Student Center. At 3:30 p.m. there will be a reading by the 2007 Wick Chapbook Competition for Ohio Poets winners Ted Lardner and Kevin Oberlin in the Kiva. 

Kent State Honored as Ohio's First Tree Campus USA (2/12/09)
The Arbor Day Foundation has honored Kent State University's Kent Campus as Ohio's first Tree Campus USA University for its dedication to campus forestry management and environmental stewardship.

Kent State Announces Nearly 7.5% Increases in Spring Enrollment (2/6/09)
Kent State University announced today a 7.44 percent increase in system-wide enrollment for the spring 2009 semester. System-wide the university reports 34,222 students for the 2009 spring semester, compared to 31,851 for spring semester 2008.

Stephen Colecchi, President and Chief Executive Officer of Robinson Memorial Hospital, to Speak at Kent State on Feb. 11 (2/5/09)
Stephen Colecchi, president and chief executive officer of Robinson Memorial Hospital, will speak at Kent State University on Feb. 11 as part of the university’s Charles J. Pilliod Lecture Series. Colecchi, who also is a member of the university’s Board of Trustees, will discuss the business of health care and its powerful impact on the region's economy.

Kent State Selected to Teach Entrepreneurial Courses at King Saud University, Saudi Arabia (2/5/09)
Kent State University and King Saud University have inked a $3.4 million pact for Kent State to provide entrepreneurial instruction and curriculum development at Saudi Arabia’s largest and most respected university. A team of seven Kent State educators will travel this month to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to begin the partnership between the two schools.

Kent State to Host 2009 Elected Officials Academy (2/5/09)
Would you like to learn more about the responsibilities of our elected officials? If so, attend the 2009 Elected Officials Academy hosted by Kent State University’s Center for Public Administration and Public Policy. The academy offers a two-part program on Managing Services:  Service Development and Service Delivery.

Workshop Offers Overview of National Science Foundation (02/04/2009)
The National Science Foundation and Kent State University, in partnership with NEOUCOM, Cleveland State University, University of Akron, Summa Health System and Youngstown State University, are sponsoring National Science Foundation Day featuringpresentations and discussions about its funding opportunities and programs on Feb. 10, 2009, from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Kent Student Center.

State-Wide Free Financial Aid Event to be Held at Kent State (2/2/09)
Kent State University will host the state-wide college financial aid event “College Goal Sunday” on Sunday, Feb. 8, 2009, at 2 p.m. in Franklin Hall on the Kent Campus. The free event is being held at locations across the state and is presented by the Ohio Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (OASFAA) and endorsed by the Ohio Board of Regents.

Kent State Hillel Announces Grand Opening Events for New $3.2 Million Jewish Center (01/30/2009)

Hillel at Kent State will host a two-week celebration at its new home, located at 613 Summit Street. The festivities will kick off with a Welcome Back Barbecue on Tuesday, Feb. 3, from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m., and culminate on Thursday, Feb. 12, with an all-day concert and music festival.

Kent State University Showcases Research and Creativity at Annual Celebration (01/29/2009)
Is it possible that humans will one day routinely live to be 150 years old? Dr. Aubrey de Grey, British biomedical gerontologist, will address this question during his presentation at this year’s Celebration of Scholarship, scheduled for Feb. 10 through Feb. 12 at Kent State University.  

Kent State University’s Fashion Students Compete in Design Challenge (01/29/2009)
Fashion design students at Kent State University will be competing this weekend in a “Project Runway”-type design challenge. Twenty-six students have signed up and will have only two days to complete a garment and have it ready for a fashion show on Sunday, Feb. 1.

Portage County Conversation on Poverty at Kent State, Thursday (1/27/08)
A serious, informal discussion on poverty, and what can be done in our community and across Ohio to combat it. The interactive community forum will allow residents, experts and community leaders to intimately talk about what can be done during a time when millions of Ohioans are working in low wage jobs or losing jobs and struggling to cover the basics every family needs.

Kent State’s Physics Department Named One of Nation’s Most Diverse (1/22/09)
The Kent State University Department of Physics has been ranked sixth in the nation by the American Institute of Physics’ (AIP) Statistical Research Center for the total number of doctoral degrees granted to African-American candidates between 1973 and 2004.

Kent State Hosts Award-Winning Pianist (01/22/2009)
Award-winning pianist Jonathan Floril will be performing at the Ludwig Recital Hall in the Hugh A. Glauser School of Music on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 7:30 p.m. Floril will perform pieces by Bach, Beethoven, Chopin and Scriabin.

Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative to Become First Tenant in Cleveland’s District of Design (1/21/09)
Kent State University’s Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative (CUDC), part of the College of Architecture and Environmental Design, will soon relocate to a Euclid Avenue address in downtown Cleveland, placing the Collaborative within Playhouse Square and directly on Cleveland’s refurbished Euclid Corridor.

The exhibition Confessions and the Sense of Self: Works by Noël Palomo-Lovinski 2003-2009 highlights the connections of popular culture, image, fashion and art by examining the act of confessing in a contemporary context.

Kent State Names Chandler Senior Associate Provost (1/13/09)
Dr. Timothy J. L. Chandler, dean of the College of the Arts, has accepted the position of Senior Associate Provost.  Dr. Chandler will assume his new administrative role on January 15.

Remembering Dr. King and Honoring President-Elect Obama (01/08/2009)
Kent State University faculty, staff and students are invited to join community residents at the King Kennedy Community Center’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration on Jan. 19, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event is at the King Kennedy Community Center, located at 6660 Garfield Road, Ravenna, Ohio.

Kent State Alumni to Fund Creation of Performing Arts Library (01/07/2009)
Kent State alumni Carlton and Victoria Thornbury, and their son, Alex, have committed to make the lead gift in support of the creation of a Performing Arts Library at the university. The gift will fund a planned space in the under-construction Roe Green Center for the Performing Arts that will integrate theatre, dance and music collections, including books, videos, scores and sound recordings.

Kent State Trumbull Announces Scholarship Program for those affected by layoffs (1/02/09)
Kent State University’s Trumbull campus will provide a one-time scholarship to new students who have been recently laid off from a full-time position, effective for the semester that begins Jan. 20. The offer is available on a pilot basis for the spring 2009 semester and can be applied to the tuition cost of up to 12 credit hours.

In a time of economic instability regionally and nationally, Kent State University’s administration is reassuring current and future students and their families – as well as residents contemplating returning to the classroom – of the university's continued commitment to providing the financial resources to assist them in completing their college education, President Lester A.
