Grant Funds to Improve Resources for Teaching and Learning Through Effective Use of Classroom Technology

The Kent State University Foundation today announced it received a $300,000 grant from the AT&T Foundation – the philanthropic arm of AT&T Inc. – to improve KSU’s Research Center for Educational Technology (RCET) and existing AT&T classroom.

“The investment AT&T has made in furthering the pioneering work of the Research Center for Educational Technology also is an investment in Ohio’s students and teachers,” says Lester A. Lefton, President, Kent State University. “The ongoing partnership between AT&T and Kent State University will improve the use of technology in our classrooms and prepare students for educational and work environments that increasingly require advanced technical expertise.” Lefton is excited about the research possibilities for faculty and students, calling the classroom “a true state-of-the-art facility for educational research.”

The goal of the RCET at KSU is to improve teaching and learning through effective use of classroom technology. This is accomplished by creating knowledge through extensive observation of the uses, advantages, and effectiveness of technologies presented in the AT&T classroom and by communicating that knowledge to classroom teachers, education administrators, and policymakers.

"In our legislative work, we continually strive to find the most efficient ways to connect people with technology resources," said State Representative Kathleen Chandler. "This provides the technology tools needed by the Kent State University Foundation to improve day-to-day operations and focus on the people served by their missions."

The grant to Kent State builds on the company’s strong record of giving across Ohio.  In 2005, AT&T, the AT&T Foundation, and its employees provided more than $3 million to support philanthropic initiatives across the state.

“The AT&T Foundation supports programs that build communities and improve access to information technologies,” said Connie Browning, president, AT&T Ohio. “Kent State University’s RCET will use new technology funded by AT&T to empower the educators in this community and change the lives of those they serve.”
