College of the Arts Hosts Weeklong Calendar of Arts Events on Kent Campus (03/31/2009)

The College of the Arts, formerly known as the College of Fine and Professional Arts, is hosting its Spring for the Arts weeklong event, April 12 – 19. The week will feature a sampling of events from each of its schools including art exhibits, music performances, a Shakespearean play, the annual portfolio fashion show for the School of Fashion Merchandising and Design and a plethora of exhibits in fashion, decorative arts and more, at the Kent State University Museum. 

“Our second annual Spring for the Arts event again offers a unique opportunity to experience the depth and breadth of the rich cultural offerings — in art, music, theatre, dance and fashion — that we enjoy providing the Kent State community and surrounding areas,” said Interim Dean for the College of the Arts, Dr. John Crawford.

Beginning on Sunday, April 12, from noon to 4:45 p.m., the Kent State University Museum will feature free admission to the five exhibits currently featured on display:

  • Michael Kors: Designs from the Wendy Zuckerwise-Ritter Collection
  • Confessions and the Sense of Self: Works by Noël Palomo-Lovinski 2003-2009
  • Kokoon Arts Club: Cleveland Revels
  • Rudi Gernreich BOLD       
  • The Art of Embroiderer

The museum is open Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8:45 p.m. with a nominal admission fee every other day beside Sunday.

From Tuesday, April 14, through Friday, April 17, the School of Art will display artwork by the School of Art’s graduate students in “Objects and Images: The Work of Current and Graduating M.F.A. Students” in the School of Art Gallery and in the Downtown Gallery. The School of Art Gallery is located off of Terrace Drive on the Kent campus; hours are Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Gallery on Main is located at 141 Main Street in downtown Kent; hours are Wednesday through Friday from noon to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

On Thursday, April 16, at 8 p.m. the Hugh A. Glauser School of Music will present a free Percussion Ensemble concert in Ludwig Recital Hall in the Music and Speech Center. 

On Thursday, April 16, from 6 to 8 p.m. the Kent State University Museum exhibit, “Kokoon Arts Club: Cleveland Revels,” will feature a special reception which is open to the public.

On Friday, April 17, the Men’s and Women’s Choruses will perform at 7:30 p.m. at the United Church of Christ at 1400 E. Main Street in Kent.  Admission is free.

On Friday, April 17,  and Saturday, April 18, at 8 p.m. and Sunday, April 19 at 2 p.m., the School of Theatre and Dance will present Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night made possible by the Roe Green Visiting Director Series. It will be directed by Associate Artistic Director J.R. Sullivan of the Utah Shakespearean Festival.  For tickets call 330-672-2497.

The School of Fashion Design and Merchandising’s annual student fashion show,Portfolio 2009 “Enigma,” will take place on Friday, April 17, and Saturday, April 18. For more information and ticket prices please call 330-672-3010.

On Saturday, April 18, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. the Kent State University Museum will present the second annual Creative Arts Festivalin Rockwell Hall located on the corner of Main Street and Lincoln Road. Featuring a juried exhibition of student work, the event will also highlight a myriad of media from textiles to metals on exhibit and for sale.  Students will perform live music, and there will be free refreshments as well.  The museum will be open to the public as well, with free admission.
