After a year of renovations, Oscar Ritchie Hall will reopen its doors for the African Community Theatre's spring 2009 production. The theatre returns with the presentation of "Jar the Floor," written by Cheryl West. "Jar the Floor" opens April 17 and performances continue through April 26. Friday and Saturday performances begin at 8 p.m., while Sunday matinees begin at 3 p.m.
This dramatic-comedy presents the lives of four generations of African American women who come together to celebrate their great grandmother’s 90th birthday. West’s plays are known to confront issues such as incest, homosexuality, bisexuality and transvestitism, as well as other conflicts within the African American family. “Jar the Floor” reveals challenges these women face as they experience the hilarious, and often heartbreaking, effect each generation has on the next. The performance will create a vivid portrait of interaction between mothers and daughters, and address physical and psychological struggles familiar to women of all ages and races.
The play is directed by Dr. Fran Dorsey, associate professor of Pan-African Studies, and Jennifer Jeter designed the set.
Students and senior citizens can purchase tickets for $7 and general admission tickets cost $10. For additional information or reservations, call 330-672-2300 or 330-672-0140. During evening hours, call 330-672-0151.
This production touches upon a wide variety of feminist and family themes, including issues dealing with sexual assault. The African Community Theatre would like to raise public awareness about sexual assault and how to prevent sexual violence, which is especially timely during April’s Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Attend “Jar the Floor” and help support this cause.
