Kent State Trumbull Announces Scholarship Program for those affected by layoffs (1/02/09)
Kent State University’s Trumbull campus will provide a one-time scholarship to new students who have been recently laid off from a full-time position, effective for the semester that begins Jan. 20. The offer is available on a pilot basis for the spring 2009 semester and can be applied to the tuition cost of up to 12 credit hours.
The applicant must have been laid off from a full-time position since October 1, 2008, and must provide proof to Kent State Trumbull Admissions that the lay off was from a full-time position. The documentation, which may be in the form of a letter from the employer’s former company or documentation of unemployment benefits, must indicate the actual layoff date and that the layoff was due to the economic climate and not the fault of the employee.
“A college education is a proven method to further careers,” says Dr. Wanda Thomas, dean of the Kent State Trumbull Campus. “We are glad to be able to add hope to what a New Year will promise our community and neighbors.”
The applicant must be a new student or a student who has not attended any college or university within the past three calendar years.
In addition, the applicant must apply for admission to the university and include, in addition to the standard application materials, the above documentation about the employment loss.
Prospective students must also complete the current Federal Application for Student Aid (FAFSA) form. Any grants for which the student is found eligible will be applied against the value of the scholarship. The scholarship applies to the cost of tuition only; book and supply costs are the responsibility of the student.
Also, the prospective student must take the COMPASS placement test. Students are urged to complete the application as soon as possible and take the COMPASS placement test the week of Jan.12. Information about the placement test will be provided at the time the student is admitted.
Course availability is not guaranteed. Students who are admitted to the program will be able to register for classes starting on Jan. 20. Students may enroll in classes that have seats available.
This is a pilot scholarship program solely for the spring 2009 semester at Kent State Trumbull and only applies to new admission applications.
Information sessions for prospective participants in this program will be held on Jan. 13 at 9:30 a.m. and on Jan. 15 at 5:30 p.m. in the Workforce Development Building at the Kent State Trumbull Campus.
