One Small Business' Story: The White Flower Cake Shoppe

By K. Marie David, Director, Outreach Marketing

Marianne Carroll and Lauren Bozich both graduated from art schools with majors in fine arts or visual effects. They became frustrated with the job market for their field, so they started their own artistic cake business on the side. Once they had a cake featured on the cover of Today’s Bride magazine, the business began growing quickly.

In October 2005 Carroll and Bozich attended a small business orientation seminar at Kent State Stark, and then sought further advice from the Small Business Development Center. They dedicated themselves to the cake business full-time and secured funding for a shop in Beachwood, which they opened in early 2007. Their upscale, unique cake shop has created birthday cakes for LeBron James and other high-profile clients.

The success of the White Flower Cake Shoppe and the fulfillment of the owners’ dreams are directly related to the assistance they received from the Kent State Stark SBDC in the early days of the business.
