Personal Web Space

Each student, faculty and staff member is allocated space to host personal web content.

Supported content includes:

  • Standard HTML
  • Images / Documents / PDFs
  • Java Script

Server-side scripting, such as asp, or php is not supported.

 

Securely Posting Content to your Personal Web Space

Note: If you have not changed your default FlashWord password, you must do so before you are able to post your web content, click here.

Select the appropriate operating system:

Running Windows, but don't know which version? click here

  • Windows 2000, XP, Vista or 7

Accessing your Personal Web Space

Once you have posted content to your personal web space, it can easily be accessed from any internet connection.

  1. Open any web browser, such as Internet Explorer or Safari

  2. For the address or URL, enter: http://www.personal.kent.edu/~username
    • where username is your FlashWord username

      Note: If you have an HTML file in the public_html folder, named: index.html or index.htm it will be displayed by default; otherwise you will need to include the entire directory path and or file name.

Note: Whenever you are instructed to FTP, post, or publish content, use the FileZilla instructions listed above, as they are more secure than standard FTP.


Instructions for Installing FileZilla for Windows

  1. Browse to the Client Download page (on filezilla-project.org)

  2. Select the Windows download which ends with setup.exe

  3. Download, then run and follow the installation wizard

 


Instructions for Installing FileZilla for OS X

  1. Browse to the Client Download page (on filezilla-project.org)

  2. Select the Mac OS X download which is appropriate for your system (PowerPC or Intel)
    • Note: if your system was purchased after 2006, the processor is most likely Intel

  3. Once the file is downloaded, click on it to decompress the application

  4. Copy the application into the Applications folder

Instructions for Connecting and Posting to research.kent.edu using FileZilla (for Windows or OS X)

  1. Open or launch FileZilla from the Start Menu (for Windows) or Applications folder (for OS X)

  2. Familiarize yourself with the FileZilla interface

      4. Remote directory tree
      5. Local directory folder
      6. Remote directory folder
      7. Transfer queue

  3. From the quickconnect bar, enter:
    filezilla_Win_01_SM
      1. Host: research.kent.edu
      2. Username: Your FlashWord username (without @kent.edu)
      3. Password: Your FlashWord password
      4. Port: 22 (for SFTP / FTP over SSH)
      5. Click the Quickconnect button

        Note: Quick connect information is stored to allow you to easily reestablish previous connections. If you are using a system which others have access to (i.e. a lab computer), be sure to clear private data before closing FileZilla. To do so, see step 8 

  4. When a window appears labeled, "Unknown host key", simply check, "Always trust this host, add this key to the cache", then click Ok

  5. From the Remote directory folder view, double-click the public_html folder

  6. From the Local directory folder view
    1. Locate and select the file(s) you would like to post
    2. Right-click (Ctrl-click for OS X) on the file(s)
    3. Select Upload (repeat steps a-c as necessary)

  7. Once you have finished uploading your file(s), disconnect from research.kent.edu. Click the Server menu, then Disconnect

  8. If you are using a system which others have access to (i.e. a lab computer), be sure to clear private data before closing FileZilla. To do so: Click on the Edit menu, select Clear private data, (confirm "Clear quick connect history" and "Clear reconnect information" are both checked) click Ok.
