"The New Agenda Setters:  How Do Media Adapt When Consumers Call the Shots?"

SPEAKERS:

undefined  John West is VP of Research and dean of Graduate Studies at Kent State University. West holds a bachelor's degree in chemistry from the College of William and Mary, and a master’s in chemistry and Ph.D. in physical chemistry from Carnegie Mellon University. A productive scientist, he joined Kent State in 1984 and was appointed that year as Senior Research Fellow of LCI.  He was named director of LCI in 1997, and in 2002 was named the university’s executive director for research applications. As the first NorTech Senior Fellow in 2006, he lent his considerable expertise to specific programs designed to build economy-sustaining, technology industries in Northeast Ohio.  West has published more than 100 articles from his own research and holds 12 liquid crystal-related U.S. patents.

undefined  Hollis Towns is executive editor of the Cincinnati Enquirer, a Gannett publication.  Towns started his career as a general assignment reporter at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution in 1988. He held a number of positions at the newspaper during his 12 years there, including general assignment reporter for zoned editions, Olympics reporter, housing and civil-rights reporter, assistant city editor, Rockdale County Bureau chief and Clayton/Henry Bureau chief responsible for zoned editions. He joined the Kalamazoo Gazette in 2000.  As executive editor he oversees The Enquirer's transformation into a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week news and information provider, with an emphasis on encouraging growth of the company's online and print titles.

undefined  Joshua Green is research manager of the Convergence Culture Consortium at MIT. He completed his PhD in Media Studies from the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in Brisbane, Australia. His PhD looked at the construction, scheduling and reception of American teen dramas in Australia. Since completing his PhD he has worked in the Creative Industries Faculty at QUT. In 2006 he collaborated with the Australian Centre for the Moving Image in Melbourne, Australia, preparing content and developing an accompanying publication for TV50, an exhibition celebrating 50 years of Australian broadcasting. He has published work on Australian television scheduling strategies, youth media use, the history of Australian television and the construction of the cultural public sphere. His current research interests include television branding strategies, the history and future of broadcast television, co-created media production and the knowledge produced by passionate amateurs.
