Requirements
Honors experience requirements are purposely flexible to meet a variety of needs. After consultation with your Honors advisor, you may use any of the following options to fulfill Honors experience requirements:
- Senior Honors Thesis (equivalent to two Honors experiences)
- a graduate course taken for undergraduate credit
- participation in a combined bachelor's/master's program (equivalent to one Honors experience)
- Individual Honors Work
- one-credit-hour class project contracts associated with regular non-LER courses
- Senior Portfolio
- a community service project
- participation in the National Student Exchange
- participation in overseas (e.g., Kent-in-England; Kent-in-Northern Ireland; Honors in Florence) or special off-campus academic programs (e.g., Washington Program in National Issues; Columbus Program in Intergovernmental Issues)
- departmental individual investigation (normall, registration must be for a grade)
- Internship
All courses that are counted toward meeting Honors expectations must be graded. Courses in the Experimental division of the Honors College do not count toward the required minimum number of Honors experiences. We heartily encourage every student to engage in at least one experience of individualized study.
Freshman Honors Colloquium: Thinking, talking, listening, reading, and writing
All Honors freshmen are required to enroll in Freshmen Honors Colloquium (FHC). FHC is a two-semester sequence which totals eight credit hours and takes the place of the regular College Writing sequence (ENG 11011 and ENG 21011). The FHC sequence is equivalent to two Honors experiences. The only exception to this requirement is for the student who has already completed a college-level freshman English sequence for credit at an institution of higher education. We recommend that such students enroll in the one-semester course "The Western Identity."
FHC is intended to be a year-long experience. The following policy applies to the Freshman Honors Colloquium. If you are considering any of these options, you must first consult with your Honors advisor.
- You have the option of changing FHC sections as available during the regular Fall semester drop/add period.
- You may withdraw from your FHC class throughout the first ten weeks of Fall semester, but you must then wait and begin the sequence again in the fall of your sophomore year.
- You may not normally change sections after completing the Fall semester.
Failure to complete the two-semester sequence satisfactorily may result in dismissal from the Honors College.
Pre-College Credit
PSEO, CLEP, AP, IB hours may or may not count as degree hours toward graduation in your selected major. Discuss all your pre-college credit with your Honors advisor. (AP/IB)
