Member Expectations

We encourage you to explore multiple and diverse educational opportunities and to be open to exciting and even disturbing new ideas.  Each semester we will discuss academic program options with you during advising appointments.  The Dean may make exceptions to any of these membership expectations.

Amount and Timing of Honors Work:  normal progress

As a student entering the Honors College in your freshman year, you will need a minimum of eight Honors “experiences” for graduation as an “Honors College Scholar.”  (The Honors advisor may adjust this number if evidence exists of significant pre-college credit; Senior Honors Thesis is equivalent to two Honors experiences.)  To fulfill this requirement, you must successfully complete a minimum of two Honors experiences each year.

Flexibility in scheduling these requirements is possible, but some work in Honors is required during every academic year of your undergraduate program (i.e., no two consecutive academic-year semesters should elapse without some Honors work).  Honors courses from other institutions (with grades of “C” or better) may be counted as partial fulfillment of our requirements.  Honors requirements for transfer students will be determined at your first meeting with your Honors advisor.  You may be placed on probation or dismissed from the Honors College if you fall behind on normal progress.

Grade Point Average:  Remaining in good standing

You must maintain a cumulative g.p.a. of at least 3.0 to retain membership in good standing in the Honors College.  If you lose your Honors membership, you normally forfeit your enrollment in Honors classes in the semester immediately following dismissal.  If your g.p.a. falls between 2.9 and 3.0, you are placed on probation for one semester to have an opportunity to raise your g.p.a. to a 3.0.
