 The Musical RENT opens October 30 Kent State University’s School of Theatre and Dance presents Rent the story of a group of improverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York's Lower East Side during the thriving days of Bohemian, Alphabet City, under the shadow of AIDS.  Based on Pucci's opera La Boheme, the show has won a Pulitzer Prize, gained critical acclaim, and won a Tony Award for Best Musical, among many other awards.  Recommended for 16 years old and up.  Directed by Terri Kent, October 30 through November 8, E. Turner Stump Theatre.
 Kalichstein-Laredo-RobinsonTrio perform a free concert on November 5 The Thomas Schroth Visiting Artist Series and Kent State University's Hugh A. Glauser School of Music present a free concert on Thursday, November 5 at 8 pm at Severance Hall, featuring The Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio.  The concert will also feature our own nationally-recognized Miami String Quartet as they perform the Ohio premiere of a piano and string septet.
 Opera-Figaro The KSU Opera Workshop will present its fall Opera Scenes production November 5-6 at 8 pm in Ludwig Recital Hall.  The program will feature fully-staged scenes and will include 24 singers from the Schools of Music and Theatre and Dance.  The production will also feature guest artist John Glann, an operatic baritone based in New York City.  General admission is $5, while students are admitted free with a valid ID.

Join the Kent Chorus for the May 9, 2010 special performance at Cleveland's Severance Hall
Dr. Scott MacPherson, Director of Choral Activities, would like to extend an invitation to all faculty and staff to join the Kent Chorus and sing in Cleveland's Severance Hall on May 9, 2010 as part of Kent State's Centennial Celebration.  Rehearsals start Tuesday, September 1.
 August 24 Kent State eInside Newsletter Plans are underway for the construction of a new art building.  Kent State has hired Cleveland-based Payto Architects and Ayers Saint Gross, of Baltimore, MD, to complete a space needs study for possible new facilities to house the School of Art.

The world-renowned Emerson String Quartet performed for a very appreciative audience as part of the Thomas Schroth Visiting Artist Series at Kent State University, in conjunction with the Kent/Blossom Music 2009 Centennial Celebration Faculty Concert Series.  According to the The Cleveland Plain Dealer, the audience "appeared to be spellbound" by the works of Haydn and Mendelssohn.

Ann Rutherford



 

Golden Age starlet Ann Rutherford of “Gone with the Wind” fame and the Andy Hardy film series recently visited the Kent State University Museum for a lecture.  Over 150 attended, posing questions to the actress who worked with John Wayne, Gene Autry, Lana Turner and Jimmy Stewart.  The event served as a fundraiser for the Museum.

 Visiting Textile Artist Catherine Ellis

Textiles artist Catherine Ellis visited the School of Art this past spring.  Ms. Ellis is an internationally renowned artist working with the technique of woven shibori and has written a wonderful text on the subject.  She gave a demonstration in a weaving class and then shared some of her wonderful samples with students.
