M.A. in Literature & Writing
Rhetoric & Composition Concentration

The Rhetoric and Composition (Division I) concentration in the Literature and Writing M.A. prepares students for further study in English and related fields, and it functions as a bridge to the doctoral degree program in Rhetoric and Composition: Literacy, Rhetoric and Social Practice.

The 12 hours of Rhetoric and Composition course work apply to the Ph.D. although doctoral students who matriculate from the M.A. must still complete 30 credit hours of doctoral-level courses.

Concentration Requirements:

Students must take a minimum of 12 hours of course work in the Rhetoric & Composition concentration.

Students concentrating in Division I are required to take
English 65011 Introduction to the Field of Writing: Theory, Research, and Practice)
English 65012 Reading and Interpreting Research on Writing

Two additional courses must be selected from the following:
  • English 65057 Semeiotics
  • English 63031 Schools of Linguistics)
  • English 65051 Literacy: Functions, Practices, and History
  • English 65052 Writing Activity as Social Practice
  • English 65053 Writing Technologies
  • English 65022 Rhetorical Theory: Greek and Roman
  • English 65023 Rhetorical Theory: 18th, 19th, and 20th Centuries
Students who have not previously completed an upper-division or graduate course in linguistics will also take English 63031 Schools of Linguistics in addition to the 12 hours of required course work.)
