Professor Emeritus of Communication Studies

The focus of his research and teaching is language semantics and instructional communication. He also specializes in communication in aging and intercultural communication. In addition to numerous state, regional, and national conference papers, Jerry has authored over 60 articles in Speech Monographs, Communication Education, and a dozen other journals. He authored one book, co-authored another, and has chapters in three other books. As graduate faculty, he has directed 27 graduate theses and dissertations plus non-thesis papers. He has also traveled, taught and studied in England, Europe, and China.

He came to Kent State in 1973 as a division chair in the School of Speech, developed and directed the University-wide Orientation of Graduate TA's (ONTAP), served as Associate Dean in Research and Graduate Studies, was a Faculty Senator and officer, and served three years as Interim Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

A former high school speech/theatre and English teacher in Illinois, Jerry has a B. S. in Education and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Communicative Arts (educational psychology minor). He has held numerous professional offices in 40 years of university teaching including chair of the SCA Instructional Development Division (twice) and President of both the Washington & Ohio Speech Communication Associations. He has been honored with both major awards from the Ohio association: Outstanding College Teacher (1984) and Distinguished Service Award (1988).

Jerry lives in Kent with his wife Jenelle. Their son, daughter and spouses have given them five grandchildren to enjoy.
