Barbara Hugenberg's research interests include sports organization cultures, fans as organizational stakeholders, and instructional communication.

Dr. Hugenberg coordinates the basic communication course, COMM 15000 - Introduction to Human Communication  and the annual Hyde Park Forum public speaking contest, and she teaches Gender Communication and Organizational Communication. Dr. Hugenberg is an active member of the National Communication Association and the Popular Culture/American Culture Association. She has co-edited  Basic Communication Course Best Practices: A Training Manual for Instructors,  Best Practices in Service Learning, War and the Media: Essays on News Reporting, Propaganda and Popular Culture and all 13 volumes of Teaching Ideas for the Basic Communication Course.
