News and Events Longtime Kent State Philanthropist Art Herrick Celebrates His 100th Birthday Art Herrick and John KrumKent State University was thrilled to join emeritus professor and longtime philanthropist J. Arthur Herrick in celebrating his 100th birthday on June 25. More than 170 friends and family members, including wife Margaret and son Glenn, were on hand at Laurel Lake Retirement Community to wish Herrick well upon achieving the milestone. Herrick began his career at Kent State in 1937, where he trained numerous botanists and teachers for the next 35 years. He is also a noted conservationist, having been inducted into the Ohio Natural Resources Hall of Fame in 1972. He was named Ohio's Conservation Hero in 2001. Together, Art and Margaret Herrick are two of Kent State's most valued supporters. They have made more than 100 gifts to the university to support a number of initiatives in the Biology Department. In recognition of the Herricks' generosity, the university named its planned-giving group the Herrick Society in 2007. Kent State also gave the couple its Lifetime Philanthropy Award in 2004. As part of Herrick's 100th birthday party, party-goers were treated to a show featuring photographs taken by Herrick, as well as snippets from his autobiography. The university's gift to Herrick?
